What is a Solid Surface Countertop?
Solid surface countertops are a man-made composite of acrylic and polyester polymers, mined minerals and natural pigments. The primary advantage to this material in countertop use is that it has no visible seams, and since the color and pattern run all the way through the material, it is easily renewed if it becomes worn or lightly damaged. Another reason solid surface countertops are such a popular choice, is the fact that the sink can be bonded seamlessly to the underside of the countertop, leaving no gap to clean. Additionally, since the material is non-porous, it cleans easily and is extremely stain resistant.
What is a Quartz Countertop?
Quartz countertops are made of approximately 93% natural quartz particles, mixed with man-made resins. This produces a material which is extremely hard (quartz is the 4th hardest mineral on earth) and is also non-porous, so it never needs sealing. Countertops made from this material are often difficult to distinguish from granite.
Is Natural Stone a good choice for my countertops?
Most people think of granite when considering natural stone for their countertops, although in some applications marble, soapstone, limestone, travertine and onyx are also good choices. Certainly granite is the best choice for most kitchens; it is the hardest of the natural stones and holds up well to the heavy use kitchens typically receive. Soapstone is also a good choice for kitchens and marble is popular for baking areas. Other common applications for natural stone include: vanity tops, showers, flooring and wall cladding. All natural stones will occasionally need to be sealed; usually this is done about once a year and takes no more than a few minutes.
